Salaam, and khush amaded ba Tajikistan.

Dear friends,

Hello, and welcome to Tajikistan!

As the Program Manager for Thrive Tajikistan: Partnership for Socio-Economic Development, I am delighted to tell you more about how we are helping to improve the quality of life for people living in 16 districts along the border of Tajikistan.

Thrive is a five-year program funded by AKF and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). Since 2018, we have worked in the areas of water and sanitation, health, energy, agriculture and food security, education, early childhood development, economic growth, and local governance.

In the last year, we focused on implementing large infrastructure projects and supporting farmers and entrepreneurs to build resilience and generate income, which is especially critical during the COVID-19 pandemic. To date, Thrive has constructed a 450-kilowatt hydropower plant (providing electricity to more than 2,900 people), and completed three irrigation systems, two cold storage facilities, and 25 solar greenhouses helping 5,713 smallholder farmers increase their yield and bring more crops to the market.

We look forward to keeping you updated on the Thrive program and sharing more successes in the coming years. I hope you enjoy your visit to Tajikistan!

Meet Seeno

Seeno lives in the Pamir Mountains of Tajikistan, one of the most remote parts of the world. As they pursue their dreams, Seeno and his family find expanded opportunities through AKF’s presence in their community.

AKF’s work in Tajikistan is exemplified by programs like Thrive Tajikistan, a five-year program supported by AKF and USAID. Thrive Tajikistan is working to improve the quality of life for people living along the Tajik-Afghan border, including supporting farmers to improve agricultural production, launching community-based health financing groups, connecting communities to reliable electricity access, and so much more.

Qurutob

Qurutob is one of Tajikistan’s national dishes, and is a communal dish meant to be eaten with the hands. Sometimes referred to as bread salad, Qurutob is made up of fatir (a flaky flatbread), qurut (a salty cheese), and topped with a variety of vegetables and sometimes meat.

Try the recipe from Cross Cultural Cuisine, which uses Greek yogurt as a substitute for qurut, and post a photo of your meal on social media using #AKFVirtualVoyage.
